Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 20.03.2021

Be careful in terrain with fresh wind-deposited snow in the alpine. It is easy to trigger avalanches her. Also be careful at lower altitudes. Small, wet avalanches are likely at lower altitudes.

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

on many steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Selv om fredagens nedbørprognose ikke slo til har bygevær tidligere denne uken gitt påfyll av nysnø av varierende mengde. Nysnøen ligger over eldre fokksnøflak eller mildværskare. Mildvær og regn i slutten av februar tæret godt på snødekket, og særlig under skoggrensen er det tynt med snø.

Selv om det var mildvær opp mot fjelltopphøyde i slutten av februar kan det mot de høyeste toppene fortsatt finnes vedvarende svake lag i snødekket, men dette er ikke bekreftet.

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to gale from the southwest during renoon. -7 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 20. March 2021

10 mm precipitation, up to 16 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from west, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the evening. -6 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Sterk vind og litt nysnø vil legge opp flak med fokksnø i leområder. Det vil være lett å løse ut skred i den ferske fokksnøen.

Bygevær vil gi store lokale variasjoner. Skredfaren er størst i de områdene som får mest nedbør og vind.

I lavere områder kan det gå våte skred, særlig tidlig på dagen før temperaturen synker.
